Tsunami in Japan after 8.9 magnitude earthquake

On Friday, just before 06:00 GMT, north eastern Japan was rocked by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake. The resulting tsunami, reaching reported heights of more than seven meters, with smaller waves hitting the nation shortly after, has caused an untold number of injuries and at least eight deaths, but that number is unfortunately expected to rise.

The the earthquake, felt as far away as Beijing and the fifth largest since 1900, was centered about 250 miles north of the capitol. Tokyo is still dealing with aftershocks, one of them registering 7.2 magnitude.

Rail service in Tokyo is out, as well as other transportation services. The city of 13 million people has come to a standstill. There is smoke in parts of the city, and reports of people being trapped under the streets in the rail stations.

“City is in absolute disarray,†said a commenter on Twitter who was speaking about the situation in Tokyo.

While the people in Tokyo, caught mid-workday, have remained calm for the most part, they are unsure of what to do.

The Prime Minister of Japan has issued a statement that said the country is doing everything it can to tackle this disastrous event, asking the people to help each other and help minimize the damage. The bottom line of his message was to ask people to remain vigilant and calm. If possible, seek high ground.

I was amazed when I heard that. I guess the severity rises exponentially as the Richter Scale measurement increases. Sounds like they're not done yet either, lots of aftershocks still going on. The last time they had a quake approaching this magnitude, Mt. Fuji erupted 35 days later. This has the potential to get even worse.

I just saw on the news pictures from the 10m high wave coming in town and on the Sendai airport. Nothing much you can do... Houses just washed away. They said it went 5 km inland !
PS : at this moment they are talking about 2000 + casualties and concern about a leak in a nuclear plant... A couple of trains just disappeared !

A picture no country wants to see- one of its nuke power plant blowing up!
This is the Jap one that's currently in the news, it seems the earthquake wrecked some of the failsafe systems.
Hmm..not so 'failsafe' after all then..;)

An explosion that sent white smoke rising above the Fukushima Daiichi plant Saturday afternoon buckled the walls of a concrete building that surrounded one of the plant's nuclear reactors, but did not damage the reactor itself, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters.

The explosion was caused, he said, by a failure in a pumping system as workers tried to prevent the reactor's temperature from racing out of control.

Have you all been to the MSN site with the satellite imagery of the before and after images with the slider that moves to show the effects of the disaster? plus all the video coming out showing the water destroying everything. At least here in Kansas we have pretty decent warning when a hail storm or tornado is coming. I know the folks in Japan had some warning, but crap, that type of destructive power is just friggin' hard to comprehend.

Didn't we use to have a member from Japan? I think he was an Aussie who married a Japanese girl and moved to japan. Anyone still in contact with him?

I believe you are speaking of mfred. I think he is still on the rolls here. I met him at BoB first. I haven't seen him here or heard from him in a while.

The nuclear threat.

Very bad situation...It is said that USS George Washington detected low radiation 280km (175 miles) from Fukushima.
People are told to stay inside and shut their windows.
