Bloody hell! Whe just had a small earhtquake in Holland. 4,5 on Richters scale. The quake lasted for 5 seconds. I thought it was an explosion.

LOL well I only experienced 1 earthquake before in Holland and that was 18 years ago. We dont get them that often as you might have guessed :D

Well up here in The Great White North...se get small one and feel the bigger ones from our friends down south...damn Yankee quakes...LOL

We just deal with a huge amount of snow and cold 5-6 months of the year...quakes are nothing unless they cause avalanches.

I hate earthquakes...
It is maybe only thing i'm scared to death....

I remember strong quake we had in 1998, when i thought i'll die...
I was on 6th floor, and everything started shaking...I walked to to main wall, but it was not very easy because of all that waving :)
THen, walls started to crack and squeek, things like mirrors, paintings started to fall down and i was terrified....At the second moment i knew it - building will collapse and i'll die in ruins. Suddenly i was totally calm, my only question (inside my head) was "What will that sound like?". Another terrifying thing was deep deep humming sound coming from everywhere...

Later i found out that most buildings in New Belgrade were built like Lego cubes in purpose - to withstand earthquakes. No solid connections between concrete blocks, and that allows them to move freely when earthquake hits - and that's what made that cracking and squeaking sound...

Wow that's terrible. Lucky nothing happened to you.

Belgrade is not on seismic active area, and it's very unlikely that we will be hit by devastating quake.
But, some areas around Belgrade, including some parts of central Serbia, Romania etc are...
Strongest quakes we felt were those in area i mentioned...Skopje, Bucharest...etc....
One of the strongest quakes we were hit by is Skopje quake in 1963 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1963_Skopje_earthquake ). After that one huge improvements in construction were introduced ( like that one i mentioned ).

Interesting thing...only building oriented in specific way felt that quake really hard ( like mine :) )....others, that were oriented different way felt only small tremors...

Anyway...even i do know that quake most probably wont kill me, i'm scared do death when building starts to shake...
It's one of those feelings when you can't do absolutely anything to help yourself....

These are videos from latest one.
Two people were killed in this one.

We felt this one in Belgrade too...
I know, when i compare this videos with Japan quakes videos these look just like entertainment :)

The most powerful earthquake in Romania in recent years has been March 4, 1977, 7.2 on the Richter scale (56 seconds), 1600 deaths.
