Hey,

I was just wondering if the Hearts of Iron series has a significant following amongst the faithful here? I really like it but appreciate it is somewhat niche, even amongst wargame and strategy enthusiasts.

I never got into the HoI 3 because of the clunky and really confusing UI but I still occasionally play HoI 2 mod called The Kaiserreich and CORE-mod for Arsenal of Democracy.

Yeah I know what you mean. I just came back to it after a year and have to re-learn a lot of it :)
I do like it though, it can really provide a hefty challenge and can be a pretty interesting sandbox as well.

I only picked up the series with number 3, though I understand that the second in the series was very popular.

yeah it's a bit of a monster.

Every country in the world is modelled in terms of politics, intelligence, diplomacy, research and production. Warfare is conducted down to divisonal level (but composition modelled down to brigades)

People play this game H2H !!

i have put a lot of time into hoi3. a 1/4 of that which i put into hoi2
initially i tried italy.. and by end [43] was in hindu kush assaulting kabul. owning 1/2 of Africa without a squeak from 'west' is stupid.

the ai is broken so dont expect more from hoi3

peps in deed do ply hoi3 h2h it shines then. the crazy of other nations [ai] makes games a one off free for all

I started a game as Soviet Union in '36, purged the officer corps in '37, got the historical result on the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, so annexed the Baltic states and started the Winter War in the fall of '39. Finland accepted becoming a puppet state and went on to add Sweden and Norway to the Comintern through conquest in '40. Now in January '41, waiting for Germany to start Barbarossa in late spring, early summer. Persia joined the Axis, so that sector will become active also, I'm sure, but it's all good, cause it'll give me an excuse to occupy the oil wells in Persia. Starting to upgrade my medium tank brigades to T-34 m.41.

One month into Barbarossa now, been able to keep the Neman river line in the north and the Dniestr river line the south up til recently when Rumanian and Italian infantry divisions broke through across from Odessa. Even worse I've discovered the Germans have Jagdpanthers in their TD formations and King Tigers in their heavy tank formations! Eeeeeeck!

I own every Hearts of Iron title except one of the mod.s The games are monsters and the AI can be frustrating as hell. But for what they are they are fun and I enjoy them. However, I would recommend Battlegoat Studio's "Supreme Ruler Ultimate. You can play any nation in sandbox campaign mode that runs from 1936 through 2070. It's got a steep learning curve, but it has a better AI and the units list goes on forever. I like both titles. for more modern fare the is supreme Ruler 2020 gold, which is damn fun as well...
