HISTWAR LES GROGNARDS

Re: HistWar - Les Grognards Demo available

I have been waiting for this for a long time

Re: HistWar - Les Grognards Demo available

down laoded and hope to get to it soon...I love Napoleonics

Yes I did and was disappointed with it. Maybe I am not use to the mechanics....seemed a little choppy to play ...could not get troops to move where I wanted...when i did play it ,it was still in the design step. I am not rushing out to get it.

Same here, demo is still buggy and it seems that it will need some time till its playable.

I am so looking forward to the real up and running, working game. I may finally get rid of my 25mm napoleonics, books and all, if it is as good as it was originally portended

I m checking from time to time their forum.
It seems that its really busy one with people posting varius threads, ongoing pbem and TCP games etc.
There was a patch realeased last month.Good think is that the
team behind this game is or at least willing to hear their customers opinion and have a creative attitude or so it seems.
There are several editions of the game(digital download,cd+download and an expensive one which contains helpbook and some other stuff with logo of Histwar.)
It will be good idea one of our own game testers to knock their door for a review.
If the game is good there are huge options as it can be played even by 6 players per side in a massive multiplayer mode.
I d love to see Bootie send his Scots Greys towards the French lines while MGK sending his Polish lancers to meet them.

If the game has had the majority of bugs fixed I'm certainly buy it.

I played the demo way back when it was first released and I was undecided.

I like the period and the developers seem to have put a lot of love and effort into the product. Support also seems to be quite good.

Is it worth it though, is it any good ?

Their forums seem fairly active and there was an update in May 2011 so it seems to be chugging along.

The Oobs cover a time period of 1809-1812 for the most part excluding the Peninsular war. So no England or Prussia as a major power ( Prussia is there but very limited as a minor nation). There is a mod bring England in but it is basically repaint of French uniforms I believe. The main problem with development with this title is that its a one man show, there was no development team . If thats changed in the last 6 months since I stopped playing I can't say for sure. At that time the game had a fair number of bugs both graphically and AI logic wise and Multiplayer was a mess, connectivity issues with TCP/IP and PBEM was all but useless.

If JMN can squish the worst of the bugs and bring in the later oobs as originally intended it will be a good game. At that point I would be willing to re-install it.

Re-installed Histwar this past week and have to say that the game has improved. There are now two full mods covering the 100 days campaign of 1815 and the second covering the Peninsula war, both are very good mods. PBEM appears to have been fixed as well but haven't played a battle yet in that mode since reinstalling the game. I still see some strange behavior from time to time especially with Cavalry set to recon an area attacking forces twice there size sometimes. Map graphics seem to have improved considerably as well. Will post some screen shots shortly.

The learning curve: Issuing orders is not a complicated process, getting the timing down is another story entirely. If played with historical orders delay in affect ( you can change that and the level of FOW in the options screen) One has to really have a plan and if your human opponent or the AI doesn't cooperate one can get into serious trouble in a hurry and it seems like forever getting things sorted. Lets take the battle of Waterloo as an example. Your playing as Wellington commanding the Anglo Allied army and you want to move Chasse's 3rd Netherlands infantry division from Braine L' Allued to somewhere else on the battle field. The game considers Wellingtons position on the battle field and how long it will take one of the Dukes ADC's to ride to Braine L'Allued to deliver that order to Baron Chasse, that is the amount of time in terms of orders delay you as CIC have to deal with provided of course your orders are not intercepted bye the French which is another option that can be turned off. It really is a very good system but it can be equally as frustrating.

The graphics in HW are not as good as its primary competitor NTW3 . All of us that preordered the game technically have access to new features before other folks ( call it a semi public beta ) and our current version has the option to change ratios. The stock game is 1:10 ( one soldier on screen represents 10 ) the new options are 1:2 and 1:1 but we have been asked not to post screen shots until its completely sorted. That said screen shots posted here will be of the stock 1:10 version of the game.
