I believe the huge difference is because German does not come from the original Latin but I may be wrong and that would not be the first time either.
There's that and also this has been exaggerated for comedic effect ... let's not forget that English had very similar linguistic roots ... the Saxons in Anglo-Saxon were a Germanic tribe after all.
Apparently even in Shakespeare's day English was much harder and guttural than it is today.

When on holiday people often think that we Dutch speaking people are German. It does sound a bit alike to non-German and non-Dutch speaking people.
Although I haven't anything against Germans, I don't like it when people think I'm German.... Guess I'm to proud being Dutch.
