How now Combat Mission Cold War (CMCW) - Steam or Battlefront?

With CMCW coming out from Battlefront this month and a few months later on Steam, what's the thinking on which way to purchase?
  • I favor Battlefront for it's earlier release of this game, it's known methods for applying mods, and it's likely compatibility with CMHelper. But I dislike Battlefront's manual process for applying fixes, patches, and DLC when compared to Steam's handling of such.
  • I favor Steam for it's automated patching/updating processes, tools for "subscribing" to mods (although it's not clear to me whether or how it might integrate mods from FGM's own The CM Mod Warehouse), and the Slitherine PBEM processes (which will likely support future Slitherine/Matrix hosted tournaments).
I'd like to read the opinions from members of this august confraternity before deciding how to purchase. What sayest FGM?

buy from BFC, play the game as normal until the Steam release, get your Steam key, then transition over.
Which also means you get to play the game for longer - huge plus.

As a bonus if you want to participate in the Matrix PBEM system testing you will need to buy the game from BFC. My under standing is they plan to draw the testers from those that purchase the game from them.

Steam is only really an advantage for games that either get a lot of regular patches and/or have loads of mods that regularly get updated. CM is neither. So I'd say buy it directly. You already know how stuff works that way.

Helpful answers. Thank you.
Question: Does Steam download updates to games purchased directly from original publisher but which you register on Steam with the publisher's Steam Key?
The installation needs to be managed by Steam, so techically you would need to redownload the game through Steam. Moving the folder where Steam normally installs games would probably make it just validate those instead of installing an entirely new copy, though.

Hmm, it seems to me then that one could have two (2) installed copies of CMCW on one's PC that would not conflict with each other; the Battlefront installation and the Steam installation. Each would reside in separate game directories; Program Files/Battlefront and Program Files/Steam. In effect, purchasing from Battlefront lets one get the game sooner, send more money to Battlefront, and play PBEM the traditional way immediately and via Matrix servers this summer.

I think I've decided that purchasing directly from Battlefront is the better way to go. Thanks to all who've replied to this thread.

how do you download a game on steam without going through the purchase system? is that even a thing

Yes, if I understand this correctly, it is a thing. When someone purchases a game directly from Matrix/Slitherine which is also available on Steam, Matrix/Slitherine provides that purchaser a "Steam Key" for the game which allows them to activate that game on Steam as well. Any game activated to a UserID/Account on Steam can be downloaded to that Steam UserID/Account too. Each activation (Matrix / Steam) should reside in different PC directories.

Everyone who purchases CMCW from Battlefront this month can get a Steam Key for CMCW in their Matrix account when it's released there June or July. Does this make sense?
