With immense respect to Hohenfels - and hoping for his return - I'd like to propose re-starting the Cold War Cup or continuing with his tournament. I'm willing to be the GM (if folks are also OK with me playing). Although I have never run a tourney before, I do have experience herding cats. I once drove a herd of cats from Arkansas to Wisconsin in the snow with no losses .
The 2022 proposal is very similar to Hohenfels original vision, and allows him to pick up his tourney when he returns. In the 2022 edition, Soviet forces have invaded West Germany in 1979. The first round battles will cover the initial Soviet advance, and the second round battles will cover the US counterattack. If needed, the third round battles will cover either the attempts to dislodge holdouts, or the last-ditch Soviet breakthrough attempt and US counter (see more, below).
Players:
Players join or are assigned to one of two teams before the start: Red/Soviet forces, and Blue/US forces. There is no limit to the number of players, but there must be the same number of players on both sides. If players drop out or are removed during the tournament, substitutes will be sought.
Player matchups will be set by initial random draw, with each player playing a different opponent for each battle to the extent that the number of players allows.
Tournament Format:
The tournament consists of two regular rounds with three battles each and, if necessary, a tiebreaker round with two battles. The battles are set up to simulate the initial Soviet push into West Germany in Round 1, and a US counterattack in Round 2. Maps will not be re-used. Based on feedback, we can either do Round 3 battles as smaller, with a more town/city fighting component, or have larger rumbles in the countryside.
I have selected maps based on a strategy of trying to give at least one size bigger maps for the battle size (e.g. Small Maps for Tiny battles). Given the nature of the weapons systems, I'd like more room for long-range engagement and maneuver. I've placed forces on each map and feel like these are balanced for number of units of the given area vs. too many units to manage. As the premise for this tourney is invasion of West Germany, I didn't use any NTC maps, or the few maps that are pure forest or rough terrain (CMRT imports, I think).
Scoring:
The Attacker and Defender are assigned points based on the outcome of each battle. The points from all three battles of a regular round are added up (Note that this is NOT the points scored by CMCW on the final end game screen). The team that scores at least 55% of the total points scored by both teams wins the round. If one team does not score at least 55% of the points, the round is considered a draw. If the same team wins both Round 1 and 2, it wins the tournament (e.g., if the US defeats the Soviet attack and has a successful Counter-Attack, then they win the war!). If not, the third tie-breaking round is played. The points of all battles of all three rounds are then added up. The team that has scored >50% of the total points wins the tournament.
In the very very super-unlikely event both teams score the same, then the team with the most points scored in Round 3 wins the tournament.
Victory Level. Winner Points. Loser Points
Total 9 0
Major 7 1
Tactical 6 2
Minor 5 3
Draw 4 4
There's a lot more stuff to consider, which I've drafted in the Attached file. For the moment, I'd just like to gauge interest.
Feedback welcome!
