Author/Historian James D. Hornfischer has died at age 55, author of such classics as Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, Ship of Ghosts, Neptune's Inferno and The Fleet at Flood Tide: America at Total War in the Pacific, 1944-1945. It would not be an exaggeration to say that these books are some of the greatest naval history books ever written. Entertaining to read, packed with information, and presented in such a manner as to pull you through the action while portraying the desperation, sacrifice and courage of the people who fought these battles comes through in each book. Hornsfischer was a special and talented wordsmith whose untimely passing is mourned by all who were touched by his books.
If you have not read his work you are doing yourself a GREAT disservice. He was that special.
