A Japanese soldier who refused to surrender after World War Two ended and spent 29 years in the jungle has died aged 91 in Tokyo.
Hiroo Onoda remained in the jungle on Lubang Island near Luzon, in the Philippines, until 1974 because he did not believe that the war had ended.
He was finally persuaded to emerge after his ageing former commanding officer was flown in to see him.

Wow! Only a pity he killed 30 people after the war was finished. But as always the so called "leaders" didn´t do their work. Why it needed 30 years before they sent his former commanding officer? But I salute Hiroo Onoda for his staying power, reliableness and loyality. Rest in Peace!

Greetings :)

I ask myself if he had a wife and kids at home in Nippon? Hard to imagine how he lived all these days and days in the jungle. Did he really belief the war was going on? Hard to imagine. But you know: There is just one of them out there in the bush. Still figthing

There's a chance he had Samurai heritage and when he went off to war for the Emperor, he had already consigned his life away. And when you consider the tenacity of the Japanese warriors, it did not surprise me at all. If I recall correctly, he may have been the longest to hold out, but he was not the only one to hang on after the war. Undoubtedly, communications had broken down long before the war was over.

OH well he met the fate we will all have death. I do not think highly of him...yes it is commendable his dedication to the cause, but we have to keep that cause in focus also. There was no good in it and many thousands died because of it, he was stubborn to the point of stupidity. As mentioned above he also killed innocents over that 30 years running around fighting a war that did not exist. I believe he now has his just reward.
