Mini Campaign? This is a 65,000 pt Military Operation! :D

The brain child of Odin with some thoughts and tinkering from yours truly, the best way I think this can be best described as roughly a multiplayer equivalent of a CMx1 era Operation, mixed in with an old 1980's style hex wargame.

The campaign is based on the fighting around Radzymin in Poland from the 2nd of August to around the 5th of August. It uses Pete Weinmann's massive Radzymin CM map to play out the game, with individual encounters being fought over smaller CM scenarios maps taken from the grand campaign map.

Some other features:
- Persistent battle map maintained by a game master. Destroyed vehicles, semi-persistent map damage between battles etc.
- A persistent OOB roster.
- Player defined objectives for each Combat Mission engagement.
- Varying battlefield sizes picked by the players.
- Full fog of war.
- Action Cards for odd and unique twists and turns.

The players taking part are:

Axis - @Odin , @Dutch Grenadier , @DasTiger
Soviet - @nathangun , @PhilM , @Strachwitz
Game Master - @Ithikial

The good news for everyone else is that if this gets off to a good start and the rules don't break, it can be easily be transferred to any other battlefield / theater. All you'll need is a large CM map (5km x 5km maps? Master maps?) and a bit of creativity. No other program program required. (Okay Photoshop and MS Excel helps).

Keep posted for updates. Meanwhile the two sides need to go shopping for a 65,000 point army. :)

Well done, @Ithikial and @Odin! :)

@PhilM and @Strachwitz

The word "Soviet" means "Council" and I'd say we discuss our turns and strategies together as a team. (But no worries, I will sign responsible against
the STAVKA). ;)

Where do we discuss this? In a private inbox conversation with @Ithikial included, right?

I agree, a conversation for the three of us plus Ithikial sounds a great way of managing our side.

I second that. A conversation should be sufficient for the beginning. Maybe later we can get a subforumto discuss things better and share pictures, intel and stuff in different threads. A conversation is going to be too big to be convenient after a short time in terms of searching for stuff. And boy, this campaign will definitely last for more than a year.

You'll see Soviet and Axis HQ's in this forum. Once @Bootie adds you to the respective HQ and locks everyone else out only you three and me will be able to see the posts. Ball will get rolling when that happens. :)

Great work @Ithikial the addition of a GM is going to improve things significantly and fantastic work on the rules BTW!

@DasTiger @Dutch Grenadier Shall we meet to discuss in the Axis HQ forum once it's in place?

@nathangun my original rules were developed with a view to playing without a GM if needs must, if you want to take a gander let me know.

@Bootie thanks for giving us a forum to run the campaign from - it's much appreciated. I hope we can help keep the good people of FGM entertained with our updates

Looking forward to getting this started!

No probs. Excel and Word I can do. Photoshop... nope. :p

Odin take a closer look at the ceasfire and tactical withdrawal rules. Any changes let me know. You know my thoughts/probs with the exit zones with the Destroy mission active.

@Ithikial The rules look like they are pretty much there. I have made a few comments on the copy you saved in Axis HQ folder though, which I think it'd be worth you taking a look at. Also I'd recommend using the campaign map I've posted in the Radzymin development folder (and copied a link to below). It has been enlarged for easier use with the counters. Re the the withdraw zones, I posted a few comments on the copy saved in the campaign development folder at the beginning of the week.

@nathangun Here's a copy of the first draft rules, which I developed with a view to be able to play just 2 player if needs be. It would require both players to posses image editing software such as photoshop to manage the campaign game. There are also links to the campaign map and Wenmann's CM scenario map (which you'll need to cut at least a third off to view) . I've also posted links to the counters which would be used on the campaign map (photoshop PSD format).

If @Ithikial doesn't mind I guess we could post the edited rules once they're signed off?

Just updating the rules in the dropbox folders. Big one is the attacker mission, will put it on hold and have the withdrawal zones.
So no 'Destroy Objectives' at present.

At a LAN today but will do more tonight.

Thanks for maintaining withdrawals zones @Ithikial it is much appreciated. Those changes look good to me, I put a a couple more notes by the side to confirm. I think you're right about the attacker being able to set terrain objectives. I also misread the points allocation - 5,000 arty out of 65,000 points seems fair to me.

Just a couple of questions as things stand -
  • To confirm declaring a battle will not reveal any additional information about the enemy's force composition? That will have to be discovered either by recon or the hard way and just going blindly into battle?
  • All units bought must be bought as 'regular'? I see morale and leadership levels are dependent on action cards, but can players buy units by the formation with varying experience levels (ie by the battalion for infantry or company for armour)? I think breaking experience to platoon or squad level would be too much work trying to maintain, but purchasing by the company or battalion wouldn't be too difficult to detail.

No. Discover the hard way or undertake recon.

'Typical' gives a mix of green - veteran. Not trying to keep this static though GM maintaining the force. Nightmare. 'Typical' setting is this campaign's regular. Shifting units up to Veteran means everyone in that unit is guaranteed that level.

Looking good - can't wait to see you guys play it out...

Great work.

I dont really fancy that. Most German units are either green of regular with low morale. I dont really like to play with crappy units. I dont mind if units hve these settings but I like to see some veteran units.

@Ithikial

I would like to suggest that 40% of all German units are veterans and all HQ units are veterans or up. Morale is between normal and high. At this stage of the war the German army was still a formible fighting machine with good morale.

Russian units consist of 60% veterans with high morale. I think reflects the time of the war in total.

And all units have exellent equipment
