My favourate airplane of all time

I agree ... awe inspiring piece of aviation technology this...

My Fire Lookout tower was about 30 miles east (as the crow flies) of Beale AFB in California where they were stationed. Got to see them at airshows there and occasionally, as they were coming or going.

One of the things about it I really like is the fact that it leaked fuel when standing on the tarmac...
The surface of the plane shrunk because it was cold and expanded in the air at speed because of friction.

And it is just a beautiful airplane.

Yep before opening this thread and reading the title I immediately thought of the SR-71. Even to this day it still looks great.

The popular favorites from WWII era are of course the Spitfire and P-51. Which are no doubt great warbirds from that era. But my other favorite is the Corsair. Especially the F4U-1C version that sported four 20mm guns. Not that it was needed to shoot down Jap planes, the six 50 cals were plenty for that. ;)

I worked with a P-38 pilot who remarked that flying a P-38 was like driving a truck. He spent all of WW2, flying patrols off the coast of California.
