Weidmann did a block as out of a educational book. On the picture You can see he does the block with the upper shinbone - almost with the knee. That particular area is the most insensible part of the leg. If You have learned to use that instinctively a Low-Kick isn´t a well thought option of Your opponent.
There was a similar accident before years. If I remember it right it happened in the heavy weight class. The broken part of the leg laid itself parallel to the unbroken part. The fighter fell down and got unconscious instantly.

I had a teammate in Soccer who had that happen on the pitch. We could hear that bone snap from across the field.
