I guess this belongs here to the "Flight Simulators" section: https://www.reentrygame.com/

GameCover.png

A simulator of early NASA spacecraft - Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, down to every button, lever and handle. It's in early access and all made (apparently) by one guy in his free time, so I expected a degree of clunkiness, but it's actually not at all bad in this respect. I'm halfway through my Mercury training and so far it's amazing - the level of detail is just incredible. The game manual for Mercury alone has 90 pages.

The Few Good Men in space!
I've heard of Kerbal that it's a good (the best?) space sim. But I like Reentry because it tries to recreate historic missions and spacecraft. There's something special for me about that era. I hope it gets finished and polished.

Ya boi, opening up the can of worms of "best space sim." The title of best space sim belongs to Orbiter, imo, but it's not as accessible as KSP is. KSP is really good, though. The developer cut his orbital teeth on Orbiter, which inspired him to make KSP. Edit: Here's an Oribter AAR I did several years ago: AAR

I have Reentry as well! Bought it the day it was released, and it's very well done. Completed the Mercury training awhile ago, but haven't really gone further yet. I'm waiting until things are further along and more fleshed out, like TEI, etc. for Apollo, before really sinking my teeth into it. It's still very much a WIP, but Petri has been making really good progress. It's going to be something special when it's finished. Definitely recommend picking this up if you're a space nerd. There's also the Reentry discord you can join, where you get more info about development progress and can report bugs and stuff.

Thanks for the tip about Orbiter - I've never heard of it. Will give it a try. It's telling that Orbiter is another one-man project. Making a hardcore space sim is hard and there just isn't enough money in this niche to make it worthwhile as a commercial project.

Reentry is definitely still a WIP, but yes, the development seems promising.

There's a great collection of mods for KSP called Realism Overhaul & Real Solar System (RO & RSS) where real engines and fuel mixtures and tank masses etc.. are modded into the game if you want your inner Space Nerd itch scratched.
In the career save you start of with 1950's technology and work to present day tech (and beyond).

Here's a couple of videos on how to install the mods and a couple of playthroughs (this guy knows his stuff).
The first two from earlier versions of the game which had a few bugs, they've been mostly ironed out since.

First Centaur (to Venus mission).

Land crew on a space station on our moon and land a probe on Europa.

A tutorial on how to install the mods.

My stint into out space from a few years ago.

Elite Dangerous by Frontier is pretty good if you crave space combat in both PVE and PVP. Sure, the grind to get enough credits, rank, and engineering for some ships can be a pain, but once there, there is a lot of combat options for you.

It is okay - you have to be forgiving though, it is not a polished product and it is made by a one-man amateur studio. It works without major glitches, at least for me.
Since the post I tried to break it and concluded that outside of the orbital flight itself there is little actual physics or simulation involved. I deliberately botched a reentry, should have totally cooked and crushed myself, but I landed just as fine as when I went in by the book.
So you should understand that the game is about the procedures and checklists the astronauts went through. You have a detailed cockpit with all the controls that you can push but in some cases the controls don't actually "control" anything. Feels more like an educational tool than a game. That works for me, but it may not work for you...

If you have VR then Apollo 11 on Steam is worth getting. Only $9 and change. When I fired it up and looked to the side I jumped when I saw the lifelike image of Neil Armstrong right next to me.

Universe Sandbox is also cool and Tilt Brush is interesting.
