RISE OF FLIGHT IRON CROSS EDITION

That's a long time I was looking for a good WWI flight sim to follow up Red Baron which I played a lot in the old days.

Now that I have internet at home on my gaming rig, I ordered Rise of Flight Iron Cross Edition from Amazon (should get it this morning...) From what I read in my flightsim forums it seems very good.

The ICE gives you 4 additional planes, the particularity of RoF is to sell you individual airplanes as they continue developping the soft (At the moment they are preparing a new career mode). This way you can tailor it to what you like.

Anybody is in this one ?

Be interested to hear your thoughts. My rig is on the limits of the spec, so I'll be waiting until I get another PC before buying this one. I like the look of it, and with a high-end machine it is supposed to be very nice to look at.

My machine is not really high end, but still running XP which uses less ressource, Gamebooster to free up RAM, and I don't mind if graphics need to be tuned down a bit. So I think it should do it, will let you know.

It was best flight sim of the year at SimHQ in 2009. That's 2 years ago, so I think my Core Duo E8500 should handle it as I have a HD 5850 graphic card helping ! Am working most of the week nights and sleeping days, so tests will be next week...

I've got a quad 6600 @ 2.4Ghz, 8800GT and so it would probably run on my machine, the settings would be low though I suspect. I'm happy to wait a year or so until I upgrade, but I will more than likely get it. I've always wanted a WW1 flight sim. And this one appears to be the best.

OK I have it now since a few days and I must say I love it. It is the right successor for Red Baron. Playing full reality is very challenging if you don't have a long pilot experience in flight sims because these airplanes are tricky to fly, very light and affected by the wind. On top of that you have to manage your engine carefully ( cowl flaps or mixture depending if inline or rotative engines) as they tend to break easily if too warm, too cold or over revving. But you really feel like flying ...
Graphics are very good looking, and it runs with high settings on my rig and supports my Track IR 5.
I like it so much in fact that I purchased a few additional german planes plus field mods (additional instruments for most of them) and I joined a newly formed online french group flying german airplanes (Jasta 18) for coop missions against AI or other allied squadrons. I'm sure it's going to be a ball !! Will let you know from first group flights...

Man, your post here and our conversation over the match has got me seriously looking at a new graphics card. I am running Vista 32bit, 3 GB RAM, AMD Athlon 7550 Dual-Core @ 2.5 ghz, and a GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 w/128MB. I can run RoF, but barely. I should tell you all, when you get ICE, you get the 4 extra planes PLUS a bonus aircraft. It is supposed to depend on where you get the game, Amazon, Gamestop, etc. The bonus plane I got is the Nieuport 17, and she is a beauty.

After ICE (Albatros D2 and DVa, Fokker DVII, triplane DR1) , I got the total collection of german planes except the Gotha bomber (Albatros D2 late, D3, Fokker EIII Eindecker, DVIIf, DVIII, Pfalz DIIIa, Pfalz DXII, DFW CV 2 seater) for 37 $.
My first online mission is scheduled tomorrow, flying n° 4 in a flight of Albatros DVa. Mission escort of 2 DFW bombers ( pilots from team) to bomb airfield. Weather lousy ( rain and wind ) and expected enemy activity... Full realism and engine management. Comms via pilot gestures ingame. Victories must be on guncam (ingame recorder) to be official. Wish me luck !
Will do some dogfight training in the afternoon after watching Formula 1 Turkey GP.. (weather also lousy here rain and 100 kmh wind today !) Will post after action report on Monday !

Report on first online flight :

We encountered some technical problems with the setup of our Teamspeak3 server, after 15 mins we all got on the same channel. After that getting into the game and joining the server was easy. We had to make a restart because one player had a little joystick pb...
Second try was the good one.
Both bombers took off while we were warming up our engines (this is modeled, you really need to warm up with radiator flaps closed for 2-3 mins) Flight leader gave the "go" hand signal and we take off at 2 secs interval. I am flying n° 3 so last left position in the V formation. Our flight leader forgot the wind and we took off crosswind instead of into the wind, which was a little tricky... To my surprise, they didn't do a circle around the airfield to take formation (may be leader was worried he couldn't catch up with the bombers we were escorting...) so it took me a few minutes of the flight to catch up. It is important to be close to each other, because there is no radio and all the comms are by gestures of the pilot or shaking of wings. When I finally found my place in the flight, we were coming above the front line and the Flak was starting.
It was the moment my internet connection failed... I had a short "disconnect-reconnect" but that was enough to loose the server... Happens sometimes on week ends because of heavy traffic !
From what I read on the forum, bombers reached the enemy airfield, the Albatros joined the attack but some were shot down by Flak and MGs defending the airfield ( seems that MGs either on fixed defense or on board enemy bombers are damned precise in that fligh sim. Now I only attack bombers from under or straight front )
Next coop is on Tuesday, hope technology will not let me down !

This is my new personal Fokker D VII :

Beautiful!!! Always loved the D.VII, and with red/white it's superb!!!

Had to land in the country...

After a nice fight with some Sopwith triplanes

Heavy bombers are also in the game (and flyable, which allows playing of coop escort missions)

Handley- Page HP 0-400 for allies

And I had confirmation on last night online mission that it takes a LOT of shots to bring them down. Preferably aim at 1. The gunner 2. The driver 3. The engines...

I have had this game for quite a while and was waiting for the career mode patch to come out - which has now happened.

Have you started playing around with the career mode yet?

Yes but it has been released as a beta mode and still rather buggy. I prefer for the moment still playing solo careers with Paul Wilson Campaign Generator 9.3, with which you play offline missions that are randomly generated with parameters you can adjust. From these you get an automatic AAR where you can write your own report of what happened, and it handles medals, ranks, keeps track of victories, etc... Something like DGen in IL2.
My point in fact is that I am totally opposed to games modes where you have to be connected to the net to play a solo mode (which is the case with the new career mode as you need to be online to have missions generated and your career is also saved on their servers. Most people don't mind, I do !
The top for me is Player vs Player - tomorrow we have a coop mission with 40 pilots - 20 Allied, 20 Germans... should be a ball again !

We were finally 32 pilots last night. Our mission for Jasta 18 was to intercept a french colonel who was having a visit on the front, from Reims to a forward camp, first by plane (4 Breguets 14 escorted by Spad XIII) then by road. Above the front, we were greeted by heavy AA and in the process of jerking around to avoid being hit, I lost track of my leader and 2 team mates (We fly as in WW1 without radio) Didn't want to shoot a flare so all the allied fighters would know where I am... Fortunately I had the map displayed on my laptop on the desk. Managed to find my way in the early morning low light deep into enemy territory. Found the forward camp and spread it with my 2 Spandau 7.92 MGs, targeting AA vehicles. Then went up the road to try and find the vehicles, but no joy ! Suddenly I spotted a few Spads high above, and decided it was time to break off (already 1 hour I was flying!) Went back to the camp on the way back to scare the hell out of them ! Was hit by AA and lightly wounded (In Rof, you see small drops of blood and your view is a little blurred. The more you are hit, the less you see) I was seeing enough and fortunately engine was not hit. Made it back to home plate. Really had a ball ! These PvP missions with many pilots are great !
