Since finishing Telltale Games The Walking Dead Season 2 a couple of days ago I went to my game catalogue to find where I was going to get my next zombie game fix from and I decided to install 'State of Decay' which I had bought a while back on a Steam sale. The reviews for it were very favourable with most hitting around the 75% mark... not a bad start.
So, I installed it with ease and of I went with any hopes I had of actually enjoying the game dashed within minutes.
Where did it all go wrong....
Well initially the colours on the screen just look too saturated... hell I even checked my monitor config but no... its definitely an in-game issue. Also the sun seems to sit way too low blinding you of incoming zombie threats.
The brief talk through of controls flies at you so fast your still trying to do the first instruction while they are finishing telling you about death moves and such like. Woah... hold the fucking horses man... I've just turned the game on.
Then within seconds your attacked by 4 very fast zombies and your armed with a branch. So of you go swinging wildly by hammering the attack button but you cant actually see what's going on as scenery (trees, lamp posts etc.) get in the way... then you have your friend Ed. He jumps in on the action too. He runs through you (literally right through you) blocking your line of sight to the zombie by standing directly in between you. After an hours playing I realised this was an issue that would last the whole game. Really bad camera work for fight scenes.
Not that you'd miss much anyway as the fighting mechanics are awful and reminiscent of a late 90's beat em up. The hit detection is rank too... I got bit by a zombie who was 3 feet away.
This game has so much potential but ruined by shoddy mechanics, camera work and graphics.
Im sure there is a deep captivating storyline in there somewhere but the low points outweigh the high points so its been uninstalled and will only be re-visited if the planet every suffers a game famine.
Thanks for reading.
