TOTAL WAR - SHOGUN 2

I picked up NTW and M2TW on Steam for a combined $10, best money I have ever spent. I may never get everything I can out of them but it will be fun trying ;)
 
Takes a lot of time to get everything out of them, specially with all the fantastic mods around in the community.

I was looking at Shogun 2 on the shelf of Game Store in town today, but what makes it any better than all the other similar types of game out there?
Also it says on the box that we have to open a Steam account (whatever that is) to play it, but I don't want to be bullied into opening accounts and risk getting loads of spam advertising and stuff.
And we can't even download the Demo unless we have a Steam account, what a load of bollox..:)
 
Spike, you always only see the negative things... :tongue1: You already needed a Steam accout for Empire: Total War as well, so you already know Steam.

Anyway: It is better than al those other "similar" games (of which, in fact, there are VERY few) becasue 1) IT's a time period not overdone by about anyone, 2) because they put everything that was good in the earlier TW games into the game and added a lot of otehr cool features, 3) it looks EXTREMELY good and has an outstanding performance even with maximum details and 4) there just isn't anything cooler than having a huge Samurai armies fighting against each other. Maybe CM, but that doesn't count.

Ah yes now I remember, I bought Empire TW last year but couldn't play it because it said I had to sign up to Steam. I tried, but my registration woudn't work properly, so I gave the game away and vowed to never buy any Steam stuff in future.
What the hell IS Steam anyway, and why does anybody need it?
Other people are having Steam-related troubles too at gaming sites around the net, not just me.

As for the Shogun game, it's real-time and I HATE real-time, they remind me of big crazy fights between soccer supporters..:)
 
Then just keep out of it and let us enjoy the best strategy game ever. Anyway it's too complicated for you, you said you only like simple things...lol !
 
This review and discussion section is for everybody to give their opinions about games, good or bad, it's not just for fanboys to say how great they think some games are.
My main beef is that if we buy Shogun 2 or download the demo, we can't play it until we do a lot of pain-in-ass online form-filling to open a Steam account, but not everybody wants to open one, so it's like blackmail because they're in effect saying- "Open a Steam account or you can't play our game"
Like I asked before, what is Steam FOR? Other games don't need it, so why does Shogun 2 need it?
And what if somebody who's not on the net buys the game in a store but finds he can't play it because he can't open a Steam account?
 
Steam is for matchmaking, online distribution and, above everything else, copy protection. Someone figured that an online platform - requiring the user to run yet another application - would prevent people from cracking/ripping games. Of course it doesn't, but apparently it's saving many developers a lot of money.

There's one VERY good thing about Steam, though: One never has to worry about patches because those get installed automatically. Requires you to be online permanently, so if your connection is crap, you might run into trouble. Either way: No Steam, no game. Simple as that.
 
I won't buy Steam games and that's all there is to it..:)
I seem to remember I gave away a Steam game last year but the guy couldn't run it because it was only Steam-registered to me, what a fecking mess!

The Total War games installed with Steam (like Napoleon TW or Shogun 2) don't require you to be online permanently. You just need to be online once to install, and after that you can play offline. I would never buy a game that requires you to be permanently online.
You just want to go online to start the game when you know there is an update.

Agreed. But if I don't like a game or the way it is protected (like Starforce before) I just don't buy it. No need to complain. Or wait for the cracked version, it usually doesn't take long...
I have Napoleon TW installed with Steam on 2 rigs with Windows XP and Windows 7, I play offline and never had a bug. I just connected once to install and once to get the update.

PS : I'm not the only "fanboy"...lol Just read all the tests from serious sites around the planet and you will find it gets 9/10 or 19/20 and is acclaimed by the strategy gamers as the very best in the Total War series.

That was me. :biggrin1: Pity, really, but there are far worse things publishers can do to us - there's at least one game that definitely requires an internet connection all the time you're playing...
 
I am also very disappointed with STEAM games. The only Total War games I have not played are the Europe and Napoleon Total war. I played a cracked version of Europe and was so horrified at how bad the game was, I didnt even finish it. In fact, I deleted all files.

BUT, I am a long time fan so I bought Shogun Total War 2 after carefully reading reviews. I have not played it because I am saving it as a "attaboy" once I complete a Microsoft certification test I need to do within the next couple of weeks.

Anyway. STEAM.... I believe it is for 2 things 1) anti-piracy (even though they get hacked anyway) and 2 (and this is probably the most important one) so that reselling used STEAM games is useless. I imagine gaming companies lose ALOT of business from 2nd hand sales.

I recently bought Fallout New Vegas (also Steam). I HATE the game, but now I cant resell it. I'm out $40.00. I took a chance with Shogun, but next time I look into a Steam game, I am going to make DAMN sure I'm going to like it.
 
It's not Europe, it's Empire TW. And yes it was the worse of the series, I didn't even buy it. I am not a fan of Steam either, but on the other hand it didn't cause me any problem either. So if the game is really worth it and I just need one connection to install, I go for it.

I disagree with Corsaire31, my friends and myself totally love Empire total war along with all the mods that add on to it.
The latest mod is the America Civil War...it still in beta, and we're have been play testing as we go.
The best of the best mods for Empire is DarthMod Ultimate Commander. Which has increase it replayable 1000% and improves the AI so greatly, that its used in many other mods. The Ai is good Strategic and evil on tactical level, in which it won't fall for the simple tactics the regular total war game would. Plus it will use flanking, ambush, good frontage attack with artillery support against you. Its almost like playing against a good human player.
Again Empire Total war with mods, is the best of the best Total war game, exception Shogun2 which I haven't bought yet.

Ah, so even if we don't want the latest patches and updates and stuff, Steam will automatically install them against our wishes, what bloody cheek!
I prefer to patch games manually myself if I've decided I want the patch after it's been tested and reviewed by the community.
I'm hating Steam more and more!
No kidding, I was looking at Shogun 2 in Game Store yesterday and almost bought it, but it said on the box "Requires a Steam account to play", so I thought "F*** it", and put it back on the shelf..:)
 
If you install it and play offline afterwards, you will never get any update. So you can decide if and when you want an update.
@ Lighthorse : you are probably right with the mods for Empire TW, but when it was published it was handicaped by many bugs. Anyway I skipped it. For me until now Rome has been the most interesting (I still play it). We will see what Shogun 2 is like. I think it mostly depends of the times in history you are most interested in.

There a few for Rome TW too.
 
I only play Rome TW. Both with (Roma Surrectum II)-mod and without a mod. I hear TW Medieval II is (very) good too.

So, despite all the negative stories I read bout it, Empire TW can be great as well ?
