@Wellsonian and I are embarking on an extended and wide ranging Fields of Glory II tour of the ancient battlefields from the Scottish Highlands to the plains of northern India and everything inbetween.

For every battle, army and map selections will be set at POT LUCK (date and geographical sorting is ON, to avoid complete anachronistic mismatches) and we shall see where it leads us.
Everything will be covered from ancient Egyptians chariots through to Roman cohorts and marauding Vikings -- and we'll get to use some obscure, lesser known forces along the way, guaranteed.

We'll keep one battle ticking over at all times, keeping things casual when RL and tourney/campaign commitments come first -- updates of the ongoing clashes will be posted in this thread... and I'll keep track of the battles on this map (hopefully I'll manage to win a few along the way :2charge:)

BATTLE 1: @Rico - Indian (Rajput) 650-1049 AD VS @Wellsonian - Ghaznavid 962-1187 AD

First battle takes us straight to the east of the map and north-western India (modern Pakistan) -- it'll be an epic clash of war elephants, cavalry and horse archers!

Elephants are always lots of fun (if a touch unpredictable)

First battle ends in a deserved victory for @Wellsonian - my Indian infantry proved just too squishy and my elephants too skittish.
The Indian lancers got into the fight just a little too late.

Next up it's thundering hooves on the lower Danube... my Pechenegs 850-1122 AD vs Wellsonian's Danube Bulgars 852-1018 AD.

Alas, @Wellsonian 's Bulgarians prevailed -- I let my Pechenegs down with inferior generalship ... those horse archers need a lot more room to maneuver than I allowed for.

Third stop on the tour is in Spain and the farthest extent of the Muslim conquests: Arabs (Umayyad) 685 - 750 AD vs Visigoths 622 - 717 AD

It was a nail biter of a battle at the end, but alas @Wellsonian 's Visigoths prevailed 61% - 56% - some of his units were nigh indestructible.
The strategic map is definitely starting to be painted red -- have my work cut out here.

Next, it's back to ancients Spartans (461-281 BC) vs Ptolemaic (320-218 BC) -- see if my, at this point archaic, Spartans can prevail against a Egyptian Hellenist successor state of Alexander the Great's... Hoplites vs Phalanx...I think I might be in for another beating here... and I know @Wellsonian gonna pick all the elephants on offer! :ROFLMAO:

BATTLE 4: @Rico - Spartans (461-281 BC) VS @Wellsonian - Ptolemaic (320-218 BC) -

BATTLE 3: @Rico - Arabs (Umayyad) 685 - 750 AD VS @Wellsonian - Visigoths 622 - 717 AD - Wellsonian victory (61% - 56%)

Alas... the Spartans tried their best -- some hoplite units fighting themselves to ragged remnants trying to hold back the Phalanx steamrollers while their comrades try and flank them and hopefully destroy them... and avoid the superior enemy cavalry.

We didn't do too badly ... routed their elephants, routed one of their cavalry units off the field, routed their superior barbarian allies horde, routed his lighter infantry, destroyed one phalanx, disrupted two of their remaining phalanxes... then the gods of war deserted us -- within just three turns the enemy barbarian horde completely rallied and crushed a hoplite unit, all the enemy phalanx units rallied, lost a cavalry unit ... and now my remaining Spartan hoplites are just too weak and ravaged to do this all over again, and in no position to outflank anybody... c'est la guerre I guess.

What can I say, I train my guys for crunch time. Lots of cardio on the treadmill.
