My son got this for me for Christmas and I watched the series this past week.

I recall quite a few posting comparisons between this an BoB. Other than they both were WW2 settings and followed a specific unit's members, I thought the two went separate ways from there.

Most notable differences:
(a) Story lines that blended more of the soldiers relationships with family and girlfriends.
(b) With the exception of one episode detailing one officer's emphasis on training, there was a difference in discipline within the ranks in the field and on R&R. In addition a marked difference in mental preparation for the mission.

The combat was just as intense, if not more so because of the proximity of the enemy. The battlefield was more gruesome because of that proximity, the trrain and the Marines inevitable detachment from humanity while fighting an enemy who would not surrender despite a hopeless situation.

I will be adding several titles to my library focusing on the Pacific campaign as a result.

I am hoping to purchase this soon. I do not subscribe to HBO so I have not seen any of it yet.

I am watching it on Netflix. I haven't enjoyed it as much as BoB, it seems to jump forward in bigger gaps and I was disappointed with the sex, since my younger son likes to watch war stuff with me. Im only about half way through so I wont mention any plot for others and ruin it. I like the combat scenes, they are done well, but for me Im just having trouble getting to know the characters, unlike BoB. Just my 2 cents. Sure looked like hell to go through though, so as always, hats off to the veterans who make a good life for guys like me.

I got the DVD set for my birthday last November, well worth the purchase. I watched and for all those who said it was ..... I loved it and was hooked !!

I don't have HBO either, but did get to see Part 1 in a sneak peak, for HBO. I got the series for Christmas, as well. I have only watched through Part 3, so far. As far as jumping around, the PTO was very different than the ETO. Units could go a year between combat stints. It was the nature of the campaign.

Being a Jarhead, and a student of WWII, I am so far very pleased with the depictions. I have had the fortune to know and talk to many Marines who fought from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, and everywhere inbetween. They generally don't say much about the actual combat, but I have heard much about everything between. I am a fan of BoB, but due to extreme differences between the Pacific and Europe, and the Marines and the Airborne, I am making every effort not to compare the two. Apples and oranges.
