What the Verdun battlefield looks like now.

And there are some distinctly repeated patterns in the grey cloud on the right. Looks like poor Photoshop cloning work.

Or possibly a 'composite' of that era.

The renowned WWI Australian War photographer Frank Hurley's most prominent example of this (below) is a juxtaposition of about 12 different negatives:

Many years ago ( mid 1980's) in a previous job I worked in a house doing some carpet cleaning - the owner was an army veteran and had served in WW1 - on his mantlepiece was a silver platter, all bent and worn - I spent some time talking to him and he told me it came from the cathedral in Ypres during WW1 when he saw action there.
