Soviet OOB Day 1

The Germans have assigned each battalion a psd file. You guys have a few more battalions. As long as each row on the OOB excel sheet has it's own unique token looking like the rule book examples I'm cool. You'll also need to start thinking about placing them on the campaign map to represent your opening moves into the campaign area.

Is the OOB I see in the dropbox final and fixed for day 1?

Not final and not fixed. But we are nearing completion. I estimate Wednesday as final day for OOB and tokens. I still have some minor problems with specialized units like for example BA-64B recon platoons. By the rules they have to be attached to a company right? I would love to have them represented as platoon token also as this is easier to track on the map...

Ah, btw way there is one assets missing in the units psd file. The Zis-2 57mm AT-Gun. Should I use the 76mm also for these ones?

Shouldn't be a problem, just ensure it's labeled to avoid confusion.

How many cases do you have of a platoon being by itself? If it's an organic part of a larger battalion structure I'll allow it or you could tie them together under a 'Battalion HQ Company' token? The main reason we're trying to avoid every little platoon being it's own separate little piece of the OOB is because it's a nightmare on my end for recording purposes. The German players will be allowed to divide armour up into platoons on the campaign map, but it will be still recorded as one company for campaign purposes. Soviets... trying to keep in theme here but you guys have lots of everything and wouldn't be accurate to run around with small troops of vehicles. Besides a platoon of Soviet Armour vs a Platoon of German Panzers is asking for trouble from your end.

In the original rule-set, Odin originally had every single HMG and Mortar as a recorded asset just like a tank. o_O I talked him out of that one for my future sanity.

I understand that. Your mental health is much to valuable risking it for the campaign :).
Tanks will be used by company. No need to break them in platoons I guess as a Russian Company are just 10 tanks anyway. So I guess we don`t need Platoons.
Right now I have the problem that Russian Rifle battalions have a single Tank Rider Platoon. Maybe we "add" them to the Battalion HQ....

Do you want every single token layered for easy edit or do I edit the tokens after the battles?

I'm completely useless with Photoshop and the whole concept of 'layers.' I'll be converting it to a flat JPEG and using Paint for my bits as GM. Both sides will be required to keep their own psd token files updated as time progresses.

Good idea with the 'add on' bits of battalions. Given the scale of the campaign, having them out by themselves is going to be pointless. Most of these engagements are going to be Battalion+ size anyway so they aren't going to go missing from in game battles.

That sound good. So I just have to organize everything to my needs and don`t have to worry about someone else need of a layered file :)

I also sense this to be rather big battles. And if something doesn`t work out as we want we can change it during the campaign....So back to "work"

And a final note. As the tokens have a drop shadow this could be difficult converting it to jpeg. Have you already tried it?

Can I check a fundamental but basic point on the movement rules? I was re-reading them just now, and suddenly realised that what they actually say was the opposite way around to how I had fixed in my mind that they work ...

I think (!) "my" way around is more logical, which is how I presume I took that meaning when it actually says the opposite (!!).

The rules say:

3 diagonal square movement is equivalent to 2 horizontal or vertical movements

But shouldn't that be the other way around? That is, 2 diagonal equals 3 horizontal or vertical ... (1 square diagonal movement is "further" than 1 square horizontal or vertical??)

So, with 12 movement points, say, you can go 12 squares horizontal or vertical in total, but only 8 diagonal in total??

Or is it just me?? :)

Gentlemen. I am making good progress with the OOB and counters. What I just recognized is the lack of AA-assets. We now just got 4x85mm FlaK. Do you think we need additional 37mm FlaK? I am not sure how much the Luftwaffe can bring to this operation and I am still missing information from 2nd Tank Army officials (Ithikal)...

I think it will be a good idea if each panzer group has some AA assets.

I agree with this "in principle" (and if this were the real world!), but ... I've got fairly limited experience of the "new" way of Close Air Support working in RT (i.e. "undirected" by the owner), but what I have seen is that the attacks are pretty well completely unpredictable, just as likely to target their own side as the enemy, and even more likely to pick "soft" targets, e.g. trucks, when there are tanks sitting out in the open waiting to be hit ...

Where all that leaves me is reluctant to devote too many resources to AA assets to guard against attacks which are so unpredictable in the first place??

If I remember the rules correctly, opposing air missions called cancel each other out? And we get more missions than the Axis? So if we call ours, they will negate an equivalent number of Axis missions, and so eliminate them from consideration (i.e. they won't happen "in game")? Another route to guard against them without ground AA assets?

Alright. Good analysis of the situation PhilM. So I won`t add more AA-assets. And russian tank battalions have no mututal AA-support anyway.

I am about 90% ready with the work. Lot of hassle with Photoshop and naming of units but we are nearing completion!

Last update before we can start. OOB and unit counters 98% ready. And my nerves down to 12%. The editor is one of the most uncomfortable pieces of a tool I ever saw since 1990. Unnerving!

Are the three of us still to have one final look at the proposed OOB before it is committed to the Game Master? And a discussion on strategy, and how / who will play what before the counter placement on the strategic map also goes to Ithikial?
