G'day all, got a weird issue I can't seem to resolve.

(No I don't play on a potato, for some reason the graphics does that when I tab out.)

Anyway, my FO can't arrange a fire mission with the mortar squad, they stubbornly remain 'out of contact' despite: being set up, being next to their squad leader, being next to the Battalion HQ who has a radio, while the FO not only has a radio, but is also next to C Company HQ who also has a radio. What am I missing here?

I had something similar happen recently.

Check if it's the mortar platoon's own HQ. If it's the HQ of the overall weapons company, it won't work.

Also check that both FO and mortar platoon HQ have a radio.

And the FO is in the same formation as the others? It's possible to buy them as separate formations... I think they need to be attached to the battalion.

It may not be related to this, but I have found that if you fire any kind of smoke mission with on-map mortars........your ability to fire HE often becomes compromised. I usually get "target out of range" reasons for failures.

The mortars never moved from their start position, I did move command units in and out of their range to see if any change happened but nothing, probably went through a dozen turns or so.

Yep it's the mortar platoons own HQ, I also tried moving the weapons platoon HQ into the area as well but to no effect.

Out of contact generally means the tubes need C2. Does the mortar platoon HQ have a radio? Also Does the jeep, in the screenshot, have a radio? Not the Bn. HQ itself but the jeep. So is it a radio jeep?

Even if the Bn. commander has a radio (as in RTO which he should) he is not going to be bothered to act as a grid coordinate relay for the tubes. But a radio jeep could be used.

It sounds like the officer commanding the FO team is still alive? If he was KIA I think the message would read "denied" instead of "out of contact" But just double checking.

No, the jeep itself does not have a radio, is there a way to ensure I buy a jeep that does? I recall in CMx1(IIRC) when you purchased units there were jeeps with (radio) and those without, yet I haven't seen similar in CMx2?

All personnel were alive, this was just messing about in the starting area.

In Quick Battles under single vehicle purchase the US has jeeps. However I don't think they have radio jeeps on a QB purchase screen.

If a mortar team is within 2A/S of a radio equipped vehicle to include dismounted vehicles and buttoned tanks the mortars can use the radio.

Having said the above you should not need to purchase extra vehicles to get your on map mortars into C2 contact in order to fire.

You should be able to tell where the break in C2 is by looking at the C2 and Chain of Command in the UI.

Ok after more tooling about I found out what the issue was. It can't just be any radio in range of the mortar section HQ, it must be the mortar platoon HQs radio. Also both must be within range of the mortars or the FO cannot contact them.

Glad you got your fire support back on the net.

The mortars can use the mortar platoon HQ radio or most (maybe all?) vehicle radios if the vehicle is within two action spots of the mortars (to include dismounted vehicles and buttoned tanks).

Ah good to know, I also checked what happened if the mortar platoon HQ was killed (RIP Pixeltruppen giving their lives for science), if I parked the battalion HQ next to the mortars the FO was able to make contact after a few turns.

Interesting, guess the saying that people have to die for changes to be made is true! :D

That is interesting. I don't think I've seen that before.

Yeah I was surprised too, it was only a quick test so I ran out of turns to see if the same thing would happen with a company HQ or different platoon HQ, more research is required. (Tomorrow)

But in your picture, you had the mortar section HQ next to the mortar teams. I thought all US mortar HQ teams had their own radio?
