Welcome to The Few Good Men

Thanks for visiting our club and having a look around, there is a lot to see. Why not consider becoming a member?

Starting to make some progress with Mius

If I have troops in an enemy map section (square km), but I don't have enough troops to actually take the area, are my troops then lost at the end of the battle? I think I saw that yesterday. Had two platoons starting to enter an enemy map section when the battle ended due to time. On the operational map, I saw that there was a cross on my side, indicating a lost platoon.

The platoon only had a couple of squads into the enemy territory, so I thought they would just return to my lines if they couldn't capture the area...
They will return. But most probably heavily wounded won't make it, immobile heavy weapons and weapons without the crew will also may be lost.

A colored square is an integral value of concealment. It takes into account visibility from all the directions and doesn't depend only on the square's terrain, but all neighbouring terrain as well.
Hmmm.. I think what is puzzling me is whether this concealment bonus is a simple numerical bonus applied to any unit occupying that exact square.

For example, with my eyes, I see a square that has no cover, but has a yellow colour. Its neighbouring square looks exactly the same terain, but it has no yellow colour.

If I place my infantry in the yellow square, will they "magically" just have extra concealment bonus, just because the game engine has decided that square has better concealment?

Impressive how much this game actually keeps track of.

Unfortunately, it's the last turn of the campaign, so they won't return in time. However, I must remember to be more aggressive with my attacks, or at least withdraw before the battle times out, if it seems I will not take the square.

No, they don't. If there are trees 150 m left to them, then they likely won't be seen by the enemy infantry from the left side 300 m away, but if they are open from the right, then they could be spotted very well from the right side.

There is still smth that makes this square on average more concealed than others around, you just haven't noticed it yet.

OK, so if the map has a place with bushes (but without a yellow square) and a square next to it with no bushes (but with a yellow square), then I still get more concealment by placing my guys in the square with the bushes?

I prefer to use the same logic that is applicable in the real life using visual clues (taking into account that the computer vision differs from ours which is influenced by the graphics settings we use). If you see some bushes or high grass then you may suggest that they will give some cover to your infantry. Also you have to note that you do not manage every soldier, they mostly do what they think they have to do. If you place a squad in a square with a bush, some of you soldiers will take position near the bush and will be concealed, but some of them won’t and they will be less concealed but give a better awareness for the squad.

As far as I know, this "squares" don't affect anything and are purely visual indicators to assist in the deployment phase. Beyond that, they don't exist as far as the game is concerned.

So they are just a rough visual aid, not exactly matching the actual terrain? I hope you're right, because when I first started playing the game, I thought "what a pity that underneath the nice graphics it's basically a really simple game of these coloured squares"

Yes, that's exactly what they are. Deployment squares exist mostly to prevent bugs with units/tranches placement because every infantryman, MG, etc. is a physical object that will interact with the environment.

Here's another question that popped up:

In a recent battle, I had invaded a map square with a whole platoon. There were 4 key points in the square, and I took 2 of them. These two points had much higher points value than the two other points that I didn't conquer.

However, at the end of the battle, I see that the game did not award me control of the square. Even though there was literally only 1 enemy soldier alive in that km2. How come I didn't get the square?

1) Key points doesn't guaranty the square possession. You have to control (your units have to oversee) most of the square. If you saw only 1 enemy soldier it doesn't mean that there are no more there.

2) Maybe you controlled the square but if it had a smaller darker square inside when you started the battle on the operational map, and there was an enemy unit (of faded color) which didn't participate in the battle, then the square possession can't be changed.

Are you sure that there was only 1 enemy soldier left? A post battle statistic only shows identified enemy units.
And what battle radius setting are you using? On "medium" and "limited" squares containing platoon/BG that was excluded from battle cannot be captured.

This must be the reason. I thought all enemy units in the battle would be visible on the after-battle review. I scanned over the whole square several times and only saw one enemy soldier still there.

I'm certain there was no "black square".

I'm not sure this is correct, as I just finished a battle and on the post-battle screen I saw some enemy mortars far away behind a hill. There's no way I could have spotted those during the battle, so it seems all enemy units become visible as soon as the battle ends...

No, Izdeliye is right. Some of your units may saw light flashes and smoke and identified those mortars.

They were deeply hiden in trenches behind that hill, so no LOS at all. But maybe the game counts them as identified because they were firing on my troops?

That's possible, or maybe there was a sound contact? This feature was added in January 20, 2019 update and description is somewhat vague:
6) For inactive enemy units, no information is displayed in the statistics.

It's also disabled in "Come Into Battle" mode and Battle Editor.
