Lockheed P-38 Lightning (Fighter)

This P-38 participated in the attack and downing of the Mitsubishi G4M transport plane carrying Isoroku Yamamoto on April 18, 1943.
The photograph shows the aircraft after making an emergency landing in July 1943 on Guadalcanal.

Nice Pic.
To follow up a bit....

(The above pic) Ground crewmen look over Lieutenant Robert Petit’s P-38, Miss Virginia, which Barber borrowed for the mission; he returned it to Henderson Field with over 100 bullet holes.

“Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was shot down during Operation Vengeance, a mission by the U.S. Army Air Forces to intercept and kill him. While Captain Thomas G. Lanphier initially claimed to have shot down Yamamoto's plane, the prevailing view among historians is that it was actually 1st Lt. Rex T. Barber who shot down the bomber carrying the Japanese admiral.”

Here is an article on the shooting down.
Not sure if you can read it unless you subscribe. (I can for some reason)
