I see random uses of the word kinophile on the moviescirclejerk sub, but I don't get the joke behind it. What is a kinophile?
There was a post on /r/movies (which may have originated on 4chan's /tv/ board) in which someone ranked their favorite movies--only they were listed in separate categories, such as films, movies, flicks, etc. The joke being that these are all the same thing. One of the categories was Kinography, which is supposedly the highest on the artificial pecking order (because it sounds European). Since then, kino has become a joking designation for a motion picture that is in a different league from a mere movie or flick, i.e. "I thought I was sitting down to watch a kino, but it turned out to be a flick."
Kinophile=movie lover (the suffix -phile means lover, as in audiophile or bibliophile).
The word Kinophile is also an Internet meme word. Cinephile is the real one.
The prefix Kino probably comes from the German word Kino, which means movie theater.
Kinophile was referring to the German word Kino. They have a word for everything. They've always been a comforting people...
