I beg to differ sir, the kind of rider who buys a bike like this is generally interested in touring and so would probably want to to have luggage and weather protection on their machine, so finding a bike with it already included is convenient.
BMW panniers are not cheap to buy even secondhand and the screen is not a standard item on it either - things like this were factors in me buying it in the first place.

Well,

That's it - the bike has gone, ending 20 years of BMW ownership, and now I'm bikeless (feels rather odd).

I'll be back on two wheels sometime next year, in the meantime, to all the riders on the forum, ride safe, and twist throttle in the bends for me next time you ride.

Having sold the bike I later found out that the new owner had come off it on his way home - it was raining and the back wheel slid as he was exiting a roundabout- luckily he is ok and the bike suffered only superficial damage.
I have given him contact details for a company who sell new and used parts for BMW bikes (www.motorworks.co.uk) - the engine guards I bought from them and installed on the bike have proved their worth that’s for sure.

Good to hear that he's okay. Empty parking lots are your best friend when you get a new bike. Better to learn the machine in a controlled environment than on the main roads.

This chap has been riding for forty years and was twenty five miles into his journey home when he came off - from what he told me I don’t think I would have stayed on either - fuel spilled on a wet road, especially a roundabout, is a recipe for disaster even for the best of riders.

Me too........in 1998 I bought a Yamaha Fazer 600 and was living in rural Warwickshire - one cool bright October Sunday morn I hopped on the bike and rode to Chipping Norton to fill up with petrol, and on the way back I was riding over the crest of a hill on a gentle bend when the front wheel just went out from under me......bike and me slid across the road and the bike clipped the kerb and flew into the air, throwing me off - I landed on my shoulder and bruised my arm - the bike was written off and I was lucky I didn't have a close meeting with a rather large tree!!
Turns out there was fuel on the front tire - must have picked it up in the petrol station - from that time on I've always been very careful when riding into and out of petrol stations.

Nobody is immune - comes with the territory. It doesn't stop me riding though.

That changes everything.
When I had my Honda I took a left turn from a stop and the rear wheel slipped out from under causing me to come off and hit the pavement before I knew what happened. I found some oil on the road.
About a month or two ago I was riding the Griso and came to a stop at a light. Suddenly all I could smell was diesel fuel, looking down the road was covered in a huge diesel stain. People were staring at me as I waddled the bike over a couple of lanes to get out of the diesel. For the next mile or so I was so damn scared that my tires would slip out, thankfully the didn't.

Went for a nice ride on the Griso this past Sunday. Rode out to the center of the state to the Quabbin Reservoir. Rode around the reservoir and then headed back home. All said and done I was gone for about seven hours and rode just over 380 miles.
