PANZER COMMAND OSTFRONT

The following PC:Ostfront demo screenshots show how the games 'enlarge units' option give it a clear edge over CMBN which has no such option.

PIC 1- this is how PC:O looks at the 'realistic' level with NO enlargement, the units (2 German tanks and a Ger infantry front line) are almost invisible just like CMBN-

Hitting 'I' puts a floater above them but they're still at 'realistic' size and difficult to see-

This is better, hit '#' a couple of times to enlarge through medium to maximum, and the units are much beefier-

Hitting 'I' puts floaters above them (the floaters scale corresponds to the units scale)-

Many players will probably play at 'medium' size plus floaters which gives this comfortable view-

This is realistic size with trees toggled off 'number 0', the units are very hard to see-
en6.gif

And this is at max enlargement with trees off, this is probably how I'd regularly play it myself. (Incidentally note that 'trees off' also gets rid of hedgerows in PC:O, but in CMBN the hedgerows can't be got rid of. The PC:O map therefore looks much cleaner and uncluttered)-

And this is medium enlargement plus floaters, a nice balanced appearance-

At realistic scale, even down at ground level the units are hard to see-

But much better at max scale-

It may not be CMBN, but this is quite an interesting game. With lots of potential.

I admit I like it, too - it won't become my favorite, but I'll fool around a little.

Hopefully this works. I set up an album at photobucket for PCO. I was messing around with the scenario editor to try and get a line up of all the units in the game. My scenario was crashing upon loading and I asked one of the developers to take a look. Well, he upped me one better and made the scenario for me. If anyone has the game and wants the files let me know. That way you can check the models out in game instead of my horrible screen shots. Sort of like the 'car dealership' one that someone did in CMSF if you are familiar. Anyhow, I just wanted you guys to check out the numerous models in the game. I noticed some Shermans on the Russian side. I did not know that someone made the models and put them in the game. Enjoy.

I bought it, playing it, mostly like it. There are a lot of bettrer things in it than CMBB, the openness of the system, the armor model and armor orders, smoke ammo for infantry and generally smoke is more realistic in PCO then in CMBB I like the graphics also more than CMBB and I hope the modders will make it even better. There are also campaigns built in. Infantry model is not bad at all, but it is not completely finished. There is the bound command which I like, you can issue it to a platoon and the squads are advancing in a bounding overwatch mode. I like the platoon order concept where you can still adjust the separate squads, vehicles to be aligned better with the overall platoon command.

The negative part is that there are still things missing which we had in CMBB like destroyable buildings and terrain, placing mines and trenches, selecting force for random battle is missing, ATGs cannot be towed, you cannot tell infantry which floor to occupy.

When it comes to choose between the two I'll play PCO.

I agree with Artur, although I'll play both and I still like CM more - PCO still is a bit too fiddly for me.

@Spike: Is just your screenshots or are the textures in your game sharper than in mine? Looking really good in those pictures!

Yes in just one game, PC:O takes in the full 4-year sweep of the biggest military campaign in history--the Eastern Front-- with every tank, gun, vehicle and infantry type that was historically used.
By contrast, CMBN covers just a few months in Normandy with only mostly Shermans unless they bring out future expansions.

Probably an optical illusion because I shrunk the pics from their original 1400 pixels wide to 1200 wide so they'd fit better on peoples monitors, and shrunken pics always look sharper..:)
Also it depends on what game resolution we choose to use, every monitor sees things differently depending on its 'native resolution' and techy stuff like that.
We have to try different resos until we find one that looks good, I use 1680x1050 widescreen.

If you get used to the commands it is not fiddly at all IMHO. As far as I see things now I change to PCO from CMBB.
My big hopes are in the modders and Matrix's willingness to listen to gamers requests. It will take a long time to be perfect though.

I referred here choosing between CMBB and PCO :D

But yes I am a huge East Front fan, I downloaded the CMBN demo will have a look at it too. I like CMSF very much and I have all the modules, but when it comes to WWII East front wins and takes it all. And I cannot stress enough the openness of the system and the developer's attitude towards requests.

Yes, the CMBN fanboys will soon get fed up of only having mostly Shermans, hedgerows that can't be toggled off, and microscopic-sized units..;)
PC:Ostfront is a thoroughbred with a pedigree going back through PC Winter Storm and PC Kharkov, and it's taken on board a lot of peoples suggestions, so it'll be smoother than either of them.
I should be getting a review copy of PC:O sometime this week.

POS,
While talking to Rick over at Matrix I mentioned for them to get you a review copy. Told him he had some interested parties over here at the FGM and you wanted to do a review. He mentioned that you have a seriel for PC:Karkov? If you do, you can download the game with that. If you dont have a serial then they will have to get you one.

How is "borgspotting" in PC Ostfront ? I hear from one of my regular CM opponents that this to him is the biggest improvement IN CMBN over CMBB and CMAK: no more borgspotting.

Has anyone ever played Gary Grigsby's War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 ?
