Contact Front!

Normandy, August 1944. The British 43rd Recce is pushing deeper inland towards Falaise, ahead of the 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division.

After a long advance through the Norman countryside all morning, suddenly the drowsy heat of noon is split by the sharp crack of a rifle. It is immediately followed by a loud crash as the lead jeep speeds out of control and smashes into something up ahead.

You shout for your men to get out of their halftracks and secure a perimeter, while your own orders come crackling through the radio link: Clear suspected ambush positions in the orchards ahead, then push on to secure the road junction, in order to continue the advance of the division.

  1. Nice little scenario that is balanced and challenging. One quibble is that there needs to be a little more lateral movement options for the supporting armored cars as the bocage and stone walls and obstacles channel the attacker. Another area of improvement is to extend the duration of the battle, which needs to be about 15 minutes longer given that the attacker’s reinforcements arrive strung out in time and there is not enough time for the last reinforcements to make it where you need them.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Will take a look at the reinforcement times. They are somewhat variable, and you might simply have been unlucky. But of course, the battle shouldn’t be all down to luck, so maybe I will tweak the timings a bit.

About the movement options, the bocage is very thin and there are many sections of hedges that you should be able to crush through with your armoured cars, which should give you more freedom of movement.

What was your result when playing the mission – did you win or lose?

  2. What a challenge!! British minor defeat. Yes, I agree with Keith that the movement options are challenging, but I thought maybe this was intended. I also “ran out of time”, but thought maybe that was my fault for advancing too slowly. One enjoyable scenario for me, and I really appreciate the work you put into it.

    1. Thanks for the comments. I’m happy you found it a challenge but without being (too) frustrated with it. Getting difficulty right is a very tricky affair in this game, and some of the first versions of the scenario proved to be complete walkovers for the beta tester.

I personally don’t like scenarios that are incredibly hard, but those are very easy to do. It’s providing a challenge without making it too difficult that is the holy grail of scenario design 🙂

    2. By the way, if you enjoyed the scenario, please consider voting by giving it anything from 1 to 5 stars on this page.
