The Rico-Shorker War

@Rico: a question regarding the rules: Would you have had the option to attack hex F7 since Shorker used it as a jump-off hex for his own attack?

Its a lot of fun to see how this war is going on! Looking forward to all these battles...:D

@Rico: Thank you fir explaining this. What happens if one or more hexes get cut off? How long will the cauldron survive? Regards!

I think battle set up are completed ... carnage will commence soon!

The calm before the storm ... with the surprise northwards attack by the Shorker Reich Armies into the flank of the Rio Plasho line, the PRRAF defences may be a little threadbare in that sector.

Embedded photographer captures anxious, yet resolute PRRAF infantry on the lookout for signs of the advancing Shorker Reich panzer steamroller.

An aerial view from the PRRAF side of the battlefield into which the Shorker forces will be attacking ... a mix of pine woods and olive orchards. Three built up objectives to take or hold. Not exactly panzer country, so not sure what the Shorker Reich commander will send our way.

Good news is that with the clear weather, the PRR Air Force is providing air support for this battle ... the flyboys are well-trained, but so far unproven in battle -- we are holding thumbs there won't be any "friendly fire" incidents.

Once again the Free World holds its breath to await the outcome of these momentous events!

Battlefield images taken by photographers embedded with the PRRAF's southern task force attacking towards Westerwalde.

An infantry scout team observes heavyPRRAF mortar fire smother Casa Minoa, the attacking force's first objective.

Go! Go! Go! Under the watchful eye of their platoon HQ, PRRAF infantry advance at speed as the preparatory barrage lifts ... every second counts!

PRRAF infantry advance at speed under cover of the artillery barrage and to make sure they keep up with their supporting tanks.

Nearly there ... dust shrouds the olive groves before Casa Minoa ... the infantry and tanks charge forward to take advantage of the shock effect of the artillery barrage.

The next few minutes will determine, if the attack in this sector of the battle is a success... speed is of essence, as radar has reported Shorker Reich Air Force is in the air heading this way!

More battle action from the southern PRRAF attack towards Westerwalde.

Enemy dead and wounded litter the terrain as Shermans of the PRRAF "Lightning Fist" Brigade help clear the first objective.

Traffic jam amongst the follow up infantry. One can almost hear the seargeants shouting"Don't bunch up! Spread out!!"

Things not as one-sided as it may seem ... a platoon HQ gets caught by an enemy mortar stonk, suffering several dead and wounded.

News is still scarce from the other front as the Shorker attackers proceed cautiously and so far it has been mostly skirmishes with pickets and outposts vs recon teams.

Below a 40mm Bofors AA gun in action against advancing infantry ... the large plume of dust and smoke is from the PRR Air Force's first air strike -- no reports yet if they actually hit anything or not.

PRRAF AT gun covering the left flank.
"Corporal Jennings! Enemy armoured car at 10 o'clock! Just coming up behind those farm buildings! Engage!" -- Who will get off the first shot?

More action from the defensive fighting along the Rio Plasho front...

Huzzah! As the armoured car crests the ridge the AT gun fires ... and hits! "Good shooting, Corporal Jennings!"

The armoured car catches fire and the crew bails out.
Another scout car following up behind the first one gets hit by fire from a Bofors AA guns! Looks like the Shorker Reich armoured recon units have received a bloody nose -- but sign of the inevitable panzers yet!

Both battles have developed into intense fights with things still hanging in the balance...

Some snapshots from the Rio Plasho battle...

This enemy Flak halftrack has been giving our infantry endless grief (it even survived a mortar barrage)... but it's days were jolly well numbered...

A cheer goes up in the PRRAF lines as a direct hit blows the gun and its crew sky high! Capital!

On the other side of the battlefield the crew of a disabled Panzer IV surrenders. Looks like the Shorker forces are paying a high price in men and materiel in this battle.

In the other battle, The PRRAF attack towards Westerwalde, things are proceeding quite well so far...

Shermans of the "Lightning Fist" Brigade advance up the slopes towards the final objective, passing an abandoned enemy Marder tank destroyer along the way.

Infantry advancing through the hillside olive groves are strafed by an enemy fighter -- looks like the embedded war photographer had a close call there as he captures Rifleman Collingwood's getting wounded... luckily nobody else in his platoon was hit.

Both battles are past half way and both GHQ's eagerly await the outcomes... we'll keep you posted when there is more news!

Some more action footage from the mopping up phase of my attack battle along the southern coast -- it's still hard fighting as the veteran Shorkertruppen are not giving up easily...

In the first sequence on this video, the crew of an immobilised Sherman of the "Lightning Fist" Brigade struggles to spot a lone Shorker grenadier in the bushes in the back who keeps chucking grenades at their tank, eventually knocking it out.
The crew bail out and then proceed to open up on the enemy soldier with their pistols, firing under the tanks between the tracks and wheels, eventually wounding him.

In the second sequence, a pair of PRRAF infantrymen clearing the top of the eastern ridge take cover behind a stone wall as two hard-bitten Shorker grenadiers charge them... one of which is shot down ... the other hits the dirt, tries to throw a grenade but is taken out by an enemy grenade first ... his own tumbles to the side and explodes, wounding him further.

At this point no quarter is being given and prisoners are rare... at this point it looks like both battles will be victorious for the People's Republic of Rico Armed Forces! Jolly good show, chaps!

Below the PRRAF attack battle, Operation Iron Fist, as it went pretty much to plan.
Two low parallel ridges covered in olive groves, with a dry riverbed in between. Three objectives, on e quite for forward and a bit isolated, two further back ... all based around solid-looking farm buildings.
PRRAF Southern Command decided to hit first the left and then the rear objectives with two pre-timed artillery barrages (heavy mortars and 75mm guns) ... the first on turn one, the second at 15 minutes.

All the tanks (the Lightning Fist Brigade provided 7 Shermans for this battle) and infantry (1x rifle company) were to break through in a concentrated punch right on the heels of the artillery barrage on the left and penetrate far to the rear along the lee of the left-hand ridge, and then swing right, timing their advance with arrival of the second artillery mission, hoping to outflank his AT defenses.
A few recon and scout teams were assigned to carefully advance and keep an eye on the centre.

operation-iron-fist-map.jpg

The attack went too well initially at first ... resistance at the first objective was obliterated quicker than anticipated and the armour was in position to swing right quite early on and proceeded to lose two Shermans to accurate fire from Shorker Marders firing across the valley (one was knocked out early)

Once the artillery started firing (some of it short), the infantry and armour dashed across the valley and up the slopes through the olive groves for the final assault!

Hats off to the Peoples' Republic of Rico. What kind of percentage of forces have been committed to the battle so far?

The second round of fighting has been victorious for the People Republic of Rico armies -- with a Total Victory in their attack battle, and a Major Defeat for the Shorker Reich attack.

Here the AAR screenshots for the two battles.

And here the situation map for the attack and movement orders for Turn 3. @Shorker

I have done the weather roll and it's RAIN -- so no air support. Naval gunfire support is still possible.

After winning both battles the Rico Armies get TWO attacks, the Shorker armies none.

The Total Victory means that the Rico Forces can attack from the newly won hex with a 10% points bonus.
The Major Defeat in their attack means that the Shorker forces are disorganised in Hex F7 and will defend at -10%, should the Rico forces chose to attack there.

Order have come down from the respective GHQ's -- and here's how it plays out.

The People's Republic of Rico High Command has decided on a high risk strategy to exploit the successes of the previous round's fighting.

Attack 1: The PRRAF forces decide to exploit their armoured breakthrough and hope to capture the southern coastal town of Westerwalde.

Attack 2: PRRAF central command will launch an attack across the Rio Plasho river in order to cut off the disorganised enemy forces in Hex F7 and cover the flank of the southern advance.

The PRRAF naval unit is back in action after repairs in port, but cannot advance far enough in time to support the PRRAF's southern advance. The Shorker Reich navy however moves into position to provide naval gunfire support for the defenders of Westerwalde.

The weather is RAIN, so no air support is available.

Battles to be set up asap and hopefully we'll be in action over the weekend.

HA! The PRRAF took the bait! The purpose of the last battle only was to lure the enemy into the Westerwalde area - this is exactly where I wanted him to be!
Now our glorious and well trained forces will destroy the enemy hordes and give them a strike they will never forget! :)

Thread on Westerwalde:

Civilians are being evacuated...

...while our brave soldiers are beginning to entrench themselves!

"No one will break through our lines!" Gefreiter Hansemann says (3rd from the right/front).

And for all cases our impressive and victorious battleship - the famous "Nopanic" - is now anchored near Westerwalde
and will protect it with it's mighty 105 mm cannons! Incredible!
